The Government sliding scale

Here’s a little visual aid I created to better explain my feelings on government. I believe that some government is necessary. While I like the notion of Anarchy in theory, I don’t believe that is is workable in practice, due to the inherently imperfect nature of people. Some people will always be broken, and dysfunctional. There will always be strife and struggle in the world, on some level. Therefore there will always be bad people who will be happy to take advantage of any situation at the expense of others. Some policing of bad people will always be necessary. Notice, I’m not defining what “Bad People” means. That’s a social determination and will depend on what the majority of people decide that it is at any given moment. Anarchy is represented on my chart as the “0” end of the Government scale. As government approaches 0, you can see that “Bad stuff” approaches infinity. On the other hand, I feel that too much government is also a bad thing. Think of the novel 1984, by George Orwell, or of the Spanish Inquisition, or perhaps the Patriot Act of 2001. As government increases, we can clearly see that “Bad Stuff” again approaches infinity. I guess that makes me a libertarian in practice, and an anarchist at heart. This chart is just a first draft. I’ll add some detail to it and repost at a later date.
