Farmbot? What’s that?

I just heard about something called a “farmbot” yesterday. It’s a robot with a long arm that can plant and weed and water your garden for you. It can measure soil nutrient levels too. My first thought was Wow, think how much food I could grow while I’m at work! This thing would be a really handy assistant and I think it would probably scare off the deer, too. It’s based on the same technology used in 3d printers. Except that this 3d printer runs on rails on a raised bed planter. The arm swaps out tools for different jobs, and rolls back and forth taking care of the plants 24 hours a day. The best part is it’s all open source. Use it, modify it and give the new capabilities to the rest of the world. This thing is definitely going places.

If you’re curious, they have a video at http://farmbot.io

Maybe I could start a new (or 2nd) career repairing and installing farmbots…
I think that would be a fun hobby or source of retirement income.

The College Degree and Academic Inflation

An interesting article written in 2012. Probably more true today than ever. In my experience, experience trumps education. I used to think as most still do that higher education was important. I can’t in good conscience recommend that anyone spend money on higher education any more. If your employer will fund it, or you can get a grant or scholarship then more power to you but I believe that failing that, the only thing you can do to combat this is dress well, and employ lots of shoe leather. Shake a lot of hands and apply for work everywhere until you find a job. Then start looking for the next better job. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.
